ReplyDeleteQuestion #1
Antigone wanted to bury her brother for the simple fact that it would be a great dishonor to both Polynices and his family if he were not given a proper burial. Greeks has a very strong opinion and belief on death and the burial of the dead. They believed that there was an afterlife. If at the time of death the body was not buried the correct way, with a correct ceremony it was believed that the body would suffer between their two lives. Antigone wanted it to be shouted out and spread all throughout the town even though she was going against the ruler because she wanted to prove that her brother, Polynices was a human just like everyone else and deserved a proper burial just like any other member of the town would receive. As we discussed in class, Antigone’s personality was both egoistic and altruistic and the quote “shout it out” (Antigone 99) perfectly portraits it. She is egoistic because she wants to let everyone know all the great she is doing, she wants to be praised for giving her brother a proper burial, and she wants to show everyone she is brave enough to go against the ruler to do what is right. She killed herself to prove that she was above Creon and he did not have the right to kill her, he wasn’t worthy of it on the contrary to that she is altruistic because she does truly want to do what is right for her family.
Throughout the play Antigone shows a deep sense of respect and value for her family. Antigone says “There is nothing shameful in honoring my brother”. (Antigone 559) This quote proves that Antigone did not think her brother should be left on the street to rot for the crime he committed. She also says “it was his brother, not his slave that died” (Antigone 568), in saying this statement she is also supporting her idea that they are family, and family should always be treated with respect and nothing else. Any other criminal or slave would receive the same punishment Polynices did but because they were family it should have been let go.
In response to Antigone saying “I will be a criminal- but a religious one.” (Antigone 84-85), she is saying this because she knows what she is doing is wrong , and going against the law but contrary to that she is doing what is right for her brother and family’s sake, so that her brother can peacefully continue on to the afterlife. When she tells Creon “I did not believe your proclamation had such power to enable one who will someday die to override God's ordinances, unwritten and secure" (Antigone 469-499). She is saying this because she is insisting she would never disrespect the laws of the Gods. By stating this message she is also portraying that is willing to go against her own human leader but would never dare to go against the Gods the Greeks “believed” in. Creon views this as one of his people going against him, Antigone openly admits to committing the acts, she states that the denial of her brothers burial came from Creon and the law of the a correct burial came from the Gods and because she respects the Gods more than her own readers she did what they expected of her. Creon believed his law was above the Gods and that is why Antigone must be punished for her actions of going against him.
