DUE ON THURSDAY 9/6 "Antigone" Assignment Characterization Chart and Internal External conflict

Reading:
Antigone Pg. 1135-1145

TO BE COMPLETED In your NOTE BOOK: Chart & 3-4 paragraphs:
The literary term Characterization is defined as: the way an author presents characters. In direct presentation, a character is described by the author, the narrator or the other characters. In indirect presentation, a character's traits are revealed by action and speech.

1. Create a chart in your notebook. Characterize Creon, Antigone and Ismene as you believe them to be thus far. Think about their actions, behavior and speech. Describe each character using at least 7-10 adjectives to describe them.

For Example:

Creon
Ismene
Antigone
Adjectives

2. In TWO Paragraphs: Discuss two major conflicts in the play. You may discuss an internal conflict or an external conflict. You may choose one of each.  You must incorporate concrete examples from the play to support your statements and quotes to support your concrete examples.
Please cite your source at the end of your quote by using MLA format (Sophocles 55-125).

You do not need to add an Act number since Antigone is not divided into Acts.

You can choose to use page numbers or line numbers.

3. In one paragraph, relate one of the themes introduced in class to a conflict you discussed in the above paragraphs. Discuss the theme as it relates to the conflict. You may use the principles discussed in class if you choose.

****NOTE- You should do some research and read the back story to Antigone
to follow my lecture today. Research and read the PLOT summary for Oedipus Rex just to be sure you understand the background before starting the play.

**********Note*********

  • An Internal conflict is when a character experiences the conflict within themselves and struggles internally.
  • An external conflict is the opposite. An external conflict is caused by external (outside) circumstances.
  • It is possible that an internal conflict can spark an external conflict and vice versa.
  • It is possible for a character to experience both an internal and external conflict simultaneously.
