The short story “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway is a period piece that takes place in 1920s Spain. An example of this is in the dialect when the man says that "It's really an awfully simple operation. It's not really an operation at all.". He is talking about getting an abortion, in the 1920s abortion was not common and was not legal. This conversations makes the woman uncomfortable showing how the topic of abortion is very tabboo in this time period. I would be friends with Hemingway because he has written great works of literature and I would want to find out what his meaning behind his writing is.

  2. Ernest Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants" is a period piece because it illustrates an internal conflict that was introduced during the 1920s. The couple talk about getting an abortion which was a new legal possibility. One can see that this is in Spain because of the geographic features that are given. I think that it would be fun to be friends with Hemingway because it would be interesting to hear about all of his adventures.

  3. The short story "Hills Like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway is a period piece that took place in Spain during the 1920's. Hemingway sets this short story at a train station to highlight the fact that the relationship between the American man and the girl is at a crossroads. They are talking about abortion, he tells her the "operation" will be simple and brings them happiness afterwards. I would be friends with Hemingway because he was straightforward in his pieces and based his stories on his own life experiences.

  4. Ernest Hemingway’s short story, “Hills Like White Elephants”, is considered a period piece because of how Hemingway portrays to the readers the idea of identity. The American man in the short story was persuading his girlfriend to make a decision by stating, “It's really an awfully simple operation, Jig," (Hemingway 230). Throughout the story, the girlfriend was irritated by the man showing the readers the signs of miscommunication between the lovers. I would be friends with Ernest Hemingway because I find his works very interesting and would want to know what his thought process is like.

  5. "Hills Like White Elephants," by Ernest Hemingway is a period piece because it tackles the new issue of abortion during the time. "No, it isn't. And once they take it away, you never get it back," (Hemingway 231). The girl struggles internally because deep down she truly doesn't want to have the operation, but the man insists on it. I would love to be friends with Ernest Hemingway because of how he chose to live his life. He lived an adventurous and fearless lifestyle that I would love to have experienced.

  6. The short story "Hills Like White Elephants", by Ernest Hemingway illustrates the hard problem of making hard decisions. In Spain during the 1920's, abortion had just been made legal. The American man in the story is trying to persuade his partner to go through with an operation which readers can predict to be an abortion. She doesn't seem to want to go through with it but says she'll do it if he still loves her afterwards and they can live together. She doesn't know whether or not there will be true happiness in her life once the operation is over and it frustrates her that her partner keeps pushing for it.

  7. The story "Hills Like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway was first published in August 1927. The short story is a piece of its period since it shines a light on the taboo topic of abortion, and it provides both the male and female perspective on life and the conversion of a relationship into a family. A clue that the story takes place during the 1920s in Spain is the setting that takes place at a train stop in Barcelona. Barcelona is a city in Spain.
I would befriend Ernest Hemingway due to his adventurous lifestyle. I think he was a free spirit, and that his many life experiences would make for great conversations.

  8. The story “Hills Like White Elephants”, written by Ernest Hemingway brings in historical context, taking place in Spain between world wars, making it a period piece. It shows the economic and political changes and struggles post WWI. The political topic of abortion comes up in the story, introducing the conflict. I think I would be friends with Ernest Hemingway because it would be interesting to learn and explore his thoughts while writing during such a hectic time period in history.

  10. Ernest Hemingway’s short story, “Hills Like White Elephants” is known to be a period piece that takes place in Spain during the 1920’s. Hemingway discusses the topic of abortion during this time causing the American man to address the girl and say “It’s really an awfully simple operation, Jig”…”It’s not really and operation at all”. This caused the girl to be irked throughout the entire short story. The American man and the girl had a lot of miscommunication in their relationship when discussing abortion, but all Hemingway did was care about the girl. His intentions were never to make her frustrated or irritate her. I would be friends with Ernest Hemingway because I want to hear stories on his experiences, both good and bad. His stories would make for great conversation and provide people with a lot of insight about what kind of adventures and situations you might find yourself in.

  11. After reading Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants” is considered a period piece because it really gives the reader a view on what life was like and what people thought like during the specific time period. In this piece a couple sits in a small cafe in Spain arguing indirectly about getting an abortion on the unplanned pregnancy, even though it is never speciffically said in the piece. The reason that Hemingway called this piece “Hills Like White Elephants” is because the couple keeps referring to the mountains to get away from the conversation (The elephant in the room). Hemingway was clever like this, he gave us a story based on something that was never actually said, I don’t know to be honest, that blows my mind.

  12. In the short story "Hills Like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway, the young girl is struggling with an internal conflict on having an abortion. She is stuck between crossroads because deep down she doesn't want to get this operation however she knows this is what her partner wants. She says in the story "And if I do it you'll be happy and things will be like they were and you'll love me?", you can tell her insecurity of being alone as she is willing to do what it takes to please him, even if it's going against what will make her happy.
After doing some research about Hemingway, I would be his friend. He seems like a very spontaneous, intelligent man.

    The Period Shapes The Piece

“Hills like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway shows how literature is a product of the period it was written in. This is so because of the Man pressuring the Woman to get an abortion, regardless of her own desires and choices. For example, “‘It's really an awfully simple operation, Jig," the man said. "It's not really an operation at all.’(Hemingway 2). In this example, the Man is attempting to explain to the Woman that it is a very simple procedure, and that she should go through with it. Another example is “‘ I know you wouldn't mind it, Jig. It's really not anything. It's just to let the air in.’(Hemingway 2). Again, in this example, it shows how the Man is almost making the choice for the Woman by saying that she wouldn’t mind it and that it is nothing. Both examples show how “Hills like White Elephants” is a story written in a time period that is a polar opposite of our own time period.
After doing a bit of research on Ernest Hemingway, I would most likely be friends with him. First, due to his extensive and rich background in many different theaters of war, such as World War One, World War Two, the Spanish Civil War and many others, I feel that he has a very deep background, being present on several different continents at several different stages of not only his life, but of the time period.

"Hills Like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway is considered to be a period piece that occurs during the 1920s in Spain. Hemingway wrote about a couple during the 1920s that is expecting a child. This couple cannot communicate to one other which is why throughout the story the girlfriend casually mentions the hills and their resemblance to elephants. The man in this relationship is trying to persuade his girlfriend to get an abortion which during this time is highly illegal. The man says, "It's really an awfully simple operation, Jig…It's not really an operation at all" (Hemingway 230). This line shows how the husband tries to downgrade the severity of the operation. He continuously tries to convince the woman there's nothing unnatural about having an abortion. Hemingway is a man who seeks adventure, always has a good time, is extremely clever. I would've wanted to be his friend because he seems to have an abundant amount of positive energy.

Ernest Hemingway’s "Hills Like White Elephants," is a good period piece because it explores the issue of abortion in the 1920’s. “They just let the air in then it’s all perfectly natural.” In order to know that the process was not “perfectly normal” in the eyes of society back then, you would have to understand the type of time they were living in. During that time abortion was illegal and typically frowned upon.
I would be friends with Hemingway because he seems very insightful.

"Hills Like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway can be considered a period piece occurring in the 1920's for many reasons. It goes into depth about how abortion was viewed during this time in history, and even shows us how times have changed in the eyes of some. "It's really not an operation at all" (Hemingway 2). This shows that during this time, many people felt as if this was okay because it wasn't seen as a true operation, and people did not know the harm and pain they were causing their unborn children. Although abortion was not legal, and many did not believe it was something to ever be done, much like today, people felt that it was the easiest way to prevent unwanted pregnancies as well as provide the infant with the least amount of pain and suffering. I would definitely be friends with Hemingway, his knowledge was so wide and I could learn a great deal from someone like him!

This is a period piece because they were discussing whether the girlfriend was going to have an abortion or not. “It’s really an awfully simple operation” (Hemingway 230). They don’t truly know the severity of how dangerous and how invasive an abortion truly is because of how new it was. They were also waiting for a train that was going to Madrid which was a big clue to where they were in the world. I would like to have been his friend. One of the first to read his stories or him tell me stories of what he has experienced around the world.

This is a period piece because the American and his girlfriend were waiting for a train that was headed to Madrid. As well as to the fact that the man was trying to convince his girlfriend to get the abortion but she wasn’t very sure she wanted the abortion. “No, it isn’t. And once they take it away, you never get it back” (Hemingway 231). She probably wants to be a mother and wants to have her kid but her partner does not and she is conflicted with if she should or shouldn’t do it. I personally would love to have been his friend because he had such a life just full of adventures. I would love to hear his stories every time we would meet up to catch up on everything.

In the short story "Hills Like White elephants" is a period piece because this takes place in the 20s and they are talking about abortion. The man talked about the operation and how it was very simple but also awful. At the time this wasn't considered the right thing to do and most people wouldn't do it. I definitely think I would be friends with Ernist Hemingway because he seems to be a very interesting person that would have a lot of great stories.

"Hills Like White Elephants" is a period piece from the 1920s. The American is trying to convince his lover to get an abortion. The short story does not say abortion due to it being seen as taboo. The girl was unsure but wanted to keep her partner happy. It is unclear if she wanted to keep the baby because of her morals or if it was because of the abortion is a risky process during that time. I would be Hemingway's friend. Ever since I went to his home in Key West, I've discovered an appreciation for his character. Hemingway experienced many things the average person does not get to experience.

Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants," was written at a time in American History in which through its own creativity and invention was making tremendous progress. It was pre great depression, and America was settling into the familiar shape we know today. The 1920's were an era of change and growth, however was pushing the boundaries of what was considered normal. Hemingway felt abortion was a choice women should have the option to choose. Women were only just allowed to vote in 1919, but this was not enough and if they could impact elections they should be to impact their own lives. This was a brave and bold notion of Hemingway's, and. he was most certainly a trailblazer of the time. As someone who woke up at 5 am to write everyday, hunted exotic animals, and was a frequent boozer, his appeal is magnetic. Although he had his demons late in life, it would be amazing to be around such a forward thinking, iconic member of the 20th century.

  22. Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants" is an exploration of the 1920's and the rise of progressivism at the time. What makes this story a period piece is what was discussed between 2 characters. The dialogue implies that the couple are traveling for an abortion and the support of the husband. The male character represents the side who is supportive and willing to accept change and the female character is the side of doubt and unsure of the change. I would like to meet Hemingway because of his ideals and I would like to believe that having conversation with him about it would be very interesting and eye-opening.

    Illusions
In “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway, the complexity of human relationships are embodied by Jig and her lover. The couple is at a crossroad of making life changing decisions. The couple is arguing about whether they should abort their baby and go back to their “normal” reality or keep the baby and start a new chapter. Jig is willing to give up her own life in order to have a child with her lover however, he does not want to have a child. Although they differ in what they perceive as happiness, they both create an unrealistic illusion of it. While arguing, Jig says “If i do you’ll be happy and things will be like they were and you’ll love me”(Hemingway), she is desperately trying to hold onto their relationship and is under the illusion that having the baby will make their relationship strong and lasting. On the other hand, her lover is under the illusionary feeling of being trapped if she does decide to have their baby. This is prevalent when Jig says “we can have the whole world” with him replying “No we cant, it is not ours anymore”(Hemingway). He is under the illusion that the baby will prevent him from living his life the way he wants. At the end of the argument, it is obvious that the couple is trying to mend a relationship that is broken. The baby symbolises commitment just as marriage does. In the real world, couples struggle with the illusion that a baby will allow them to be closer with one another; however, these are false realities made up by illusions. Perception is also a key factor within the story as well as life itself. In the story we see two perspectives of the situation. In the “real” world scientific studies have shown that perspective towards something has a huge impact on the situation itself, almost like creating your own reality.
