"People live for love. They kill for love. They die for love. They have songs, poems, novels, sculptures, paintings, myths, legends. It's one of the most powerful brain systems on Earth for both great joy and great sorrow" Helen Fisher

The following notes are part of some background information regarding Duvalier and the Government/ Regime to assist you with the reading. Background information is very useful! Delve into a little research on Danticat! Who is she? What is her background?
In addition, I will post paper 2 next week. BEGIN TO WORK ON PUB 3!!!
We will have a class fishbowl next week!!
Fishbowl Question/ In Your notebook!!!!
Develop ONE MAJOR theme for the story. This theme should be one that YOU DEVELOPED! Discuss how this particular theme relates to our theme of oppression. You must provide concrete examples and quotes to support your theme!
We will create a list of approved themes on the board while we are in fishbowl next week!!!!
I want all of you to answer our Short Story Unit EQ:
One essential question you may want to explore based on your readings and my lectures centers around the theme of silence. How does silence strip our human existence of its whole self? What parts of the self can “silence” destroy? In addition, in what ways can we (both men and women) transform the soul and the spirit once it has been silenced?
