SEE FINAL PROJECT!

Directions: Write A 2 PAGE (6 PARAGRAPH)  response analyzing theme and tone. You may choose any poem in the Love Album, Family Album or Cultural Homelands.  Poems can be found on pgs. 469-585. You may also use poems from Poets.org should you choose to do so. Provide concrete examples from the poetry /songs to further support your ideas. Include in-text citation.

CHOOSE OPTION 1 OR 2

Option 1 – Compare one song to two poems.  Draw a parallel of theme and tone between the poetry and the music. Illustrate how the theme and tone of the song you chose directly relates to the poetry. Think about the ways in which the poet/ lyricist communicates ideas of theme and in turn this has an intended effect on the reader/listener.   Analyze the lines of each poem. Juxtapose with your analysis of lyrical poetry. This is called close reading. You have the option of using one poem from the text and one poem from outside the text. See poets.org.

Option 2: Compare two poems you wrote to two poems from the text. Analyze theme and tone. See Option 1. You may choose one poem from poets.org.

Steps for identifying, interpreting, and comparing the topics, themes, and tones of more than one poem:

Read each poem/song through slowly.
  • What is the situation or setting in each poem/song?
  • What feelings are conveyed by reading, analyze interpreting the lyrical lines?
  • Who are the speakers? What happens in each poem? What happens in the song?
  • Write down four or five words that describe the tone of the first poem and then the other. Do the same for the song.
  • Re-read the poems and try to express their themes in sentences or phrases. Then try to combine the two themes in a statement that notes similarities and differences between them?
  • Ask yourself the question, “Does my statement comparing the themes resemble my comparison of the style and the tone of the two poems? Do the poems develop their themes with comparable allusions to religion, literature, art, or other familiar or traditional ideas or associations?
