This poem is an Extended Metaphor.
An extended metaphor by definition is a metaphor that extends through an entire stanza or poem. A metaphor is a comparison of two unlike things. In the case with extended metaphor multiple comparisons are made (extended). There is a continuum of comparisons. In Polanco's Identity he continues to draw comparisons between himself and various objects.
Answer the following in your notebook:

* If you had to compare yourself to one thing what would you compare yourself to? Why? You may choose to compare yourself to many things. However, if you had to think of your PRESENT self the one that is you at this very minute draw the comparison.
