2. Read The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins-Gillman. The story is in the text.
Background:
The story was written in 1890 when many women-especially non-working middle and upper class women-suffered from a variety of physical and mental disorders such as fatigue and depression. If nothing could organically be found wrong with them, they were often diagnosed with "nervous conditions" curable through isolation and prolonged rest. although, today, it is believed that some of these disorders may have been caused by the stress of living within the rigid social roles in which women were confined. Doctors in the late 1800's typically felt that the root of many women's illnesses was their gender. They assumed women were weak and emotionally unstable, and thus by their very nature predisposed to illness.
