Due on Tuesday10/30

Reading Selections: "A & P" by John Updike & "The Storm" by Kate Chopin ( Posted on the left side of this blog)

Please Print "The Storm" and bring it with you to class on Tuesday.

Answer the following in your notebook based on my lecture, your class notes and characteristics of each time period:

  • How is "The Storm" a reflection of its time period?
  • You are Chopin. Why write this story? What are you communicating to your audience?

  • How is A&P a work of "post  modernism"? Provide two examples based on the characters and your understanding of a "post modern piece of literature."

_______________________________________________________
It is important that you do the reading. Be prepared to write in workshops on Tuesday.

Discussion questions based on the reading will be assigned (mini fishbowls) on Tuesday.

Note - A&P is in the text

Note to 9:30 class - Definition of Post Modernism

Be sure to copy this in your notebook

Postmodernism:
  • Post WWII - 1960's - Present
  • Focuses on the relative truths of each person
  • Interpretation is everything - individual interpretation and reader interpretation
  • Reality only comes into being through our interpretations of what the world means to us individually
  • Relies on real (concrete) experience over vague principles
  • Outcome of one's own experience will be imperfect, not prescribed
